Today's church is one that is largely impacted by the world rather than being the standard-setters of righteousness and justice. Using the Book of Acts as our model, it becomes quite clear that we have deviated from the effectiveness of the original body. A glance at the church's history reveals a pattern of polarization among Gentile Believers and Israel that has resulted in the power of the Holy Spirit, so mightily present upon the early church, withdrawing from the church. For those who long for the presence of God to return to His people in fullness, the matter of the Jewish people is vital. God made a covenant with Abraham that still maintains today, "I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you" (Genesis 12:3). In order to find our way back to His presence and power, there must be restoration of the church's Jewish roots in God's purpose and mission for Israel.

I just started chapter 5 of Grafted In the Jewish Olive Tree. A great overview of the covenants so far. I don't agree with the quote from Dr. Robert D. Heidler (page 66) who, while describing what possibly might be an early church gathering, refers to the meal shared by believers as the "Lord's Supper in its original context". This is completely wrong as the Lord's supper as the church now calls it, was a Passover seder which Yeshua and his disciples celebrated just before Yeshua became the Passover lamb.
I love that this chapter does describe a completely different version of gathering than we are "doing" in our western churches.

Chapter 3

I love this story about Moses who as a baby not only escapes Pharaoh's decree to have all sons born of Hebrew women killed but God makes it so the very man who decreed the killings would inadvertently raise the one escapee baby, when Pharaoh’s own daughter rescues the baby from the reeds and raises him. Get this – What does Pharaoh’s daughter name the boy? “MOSES” from a Hebrew root meaning “to draw out.”

This was the first I had heard of the meaning of the name Moses.

Later we see God’s victory and situation turn around on Pharaoh when Moses fulfills his name “to draw out” when God has him do just that with all of God’s people right out from under Pharaoh. Who can out maneuver God? It makes me awe filled and respectfully fearful of him. His love is greater than we could possibly comprehend.

“Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face.” — Deuteronomy 34:10
