Mission Statement
Helping our youth navigate a path to success by seeing tomorrow today.
Background
The presidents of the various Caribbean associations of Calgary have decided to collaborate and leverage our collective resources in partnership with local government, businesses and community organizations to help support Calgary’s youth. A youth summit designed to educate and empower a diverse group of Calgary’s high school and undergraduate students has been scheduled for Oct. 6th 2018. A number of associations have collaborated and pledged volunteer assistance and financial support to assist in planning, coordinating and hosting this event.
Purpose
With the assistance of local community members (community leaders, businesses, and well-known personalities) we seek to provide a culturally diverse environment for students with a focus on personal growth and development beyond the classroom. The principles we seek to convey are summarized in the discussion points below:
1. Encourage students to consider their own identities in context to where they are now and where they want to be tomorrow, in order to lead positive, productive and satisfying lives.
2. Challenge students to explore their social responsibilities, why they should serve and how best they can serve their communities?
3. Initiate a conversation around mental health, self-management and the importance of recognizing symptoms in themselves or others to seek meaningful assistance.
4. Provide a foundation for financial literacy and the significance of establishing healthy money habits early in life.
The event will feature guest speakers and live performances and serve as the launch to an educational series of workshops to be held on subsequent dates. Students will have the opportunity to meet and mingle with presenters before signing up for the future workshops of their choosing. The workshop themes will mirror the themes discussed during the launch event.
