University of Alberta Madrigal Singers, Conducted by Dr. Leonard Ratzlaff
The University of Alberta Madrigal Singers will be presenting a concert of sacred and secular choral music around the theme, My Spirit Sang All Day, at First Baptist Church on Sunday evening, April 28, at 7:00 pm. Works include motets by Brahms, Mendelssohn, Rheinberger as well as a variety of works by British, Canadian and American composers including Allan Bevan, Gerald Finzi, Sarah Quartel, Jake Runestad, Brian Schmidt, Ward Swingle and Eric Whitacre. Admission to the concert is free.
This concert is the first appearance on their week-long tour of Calgary and Vancouver, during which they will present various concerts and exchanges with several high school and youth choirs, as well as choral workshops with Calgary conductor Timothy Shantz (who next year will be joining the Faculty at University of Alberta) and Jon Washburn, outgoing director of the Vancouver Chamber Choir. The concert also marks the final concert conducted by their long time music director, Professor Leonard Ratzlaff. Having begun the Madrigal Singers in 1982, Ratzlaff has enjoyed the growth of this ensemble to being one of the pre-eminent University chamber choirs in Canada. Numerous successes include prizes at several international competitions (Cork, Marktoberdorf and Zwickau) and the CBC Competition for Amateur Choirs, as well as award winning CD recordings. The Madrigal Singers have frequently collaborated with Edmonton-area professional ensembles, including the Alberta Baroque Ensemble, Edmonton Symphony and Pro Coro Canada.
