Science, Religion, and the New Atheism
November 2, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm| Free
Abstract: The New Atheists contend that the claims of religion do not stand up to scrutiny. But how well does the New Atheism itself stand up to careful and thorough-going examination?
Join Dr. Snobelen as he presents a critique of the New Atheists, with a particular focus on their attack on religion, their use and misuse of the Conflict Thesis, the deployment of the Myth of the Medieval Gap in purported histories of science, and their advocacy of a philosophially naive scientism and implied scientific pantheism.
Biography: Stephen Snobelen is professor of history and technology at the University of King’s College (Halifax) and founding member of the Newton Project. He is an expert on Isaac Newton’s prophetic writings. He has consulted for and appeared in television documentaries for the BBC, Nova, and History Channel, and is a guest writer for BioLogos.
