JAN 1, 2015 POLAR DIP TO BENEFIT SURVIVORS OF HUMAN TRAFFICKING
6TH Annual Icebreaker Dip to be held in Elbow Valley
On January 1, 2015 at 1:00 PM dozens of otherwise sane men and women, cheered on by hundreds of spectators, will jump into an icy pond in the community of Elbow Valley just west of Calgary to support the SA (Servants Anonymous) Foundation in their fight to stop human trafficking and provide long-term recovery programs for survivors of human trafficking around the world. This is the 6th annual dip organized by a local group called Old Guys in Action. Last year’s Calgary Icebreaker Polar Dip attracted over 60 Dipsters and raised $75,000 for the SA Foundation.
Human trafficking is a global criminal business, bigger than the arms trade. It involves kidnapping, coercion, murder and rape. It targets the desperate and defenseless. Victims in countries where the SA Foundation works (Nepal, Hungary and Canada) are often young girls when they are tricked and forced into the trade. They endure unspeakable horror. When used up, often in their mid-twenties, they’re discarded. Some terrible facts and examples:
• An estimated 29 million, mainly women are currently victims of human trafficking
• In Nepal 10-15,000 young women and girls are trafficked to brothels in India every year
• In Hungary young women and girls have been “purchased” from orphanages
• In Canada the average age of recruitment into the sex trade is 13 years old.
Media representatives are invited to do one or all of the following:
• Interview an “Old Guy” and/or SA Foundation spokesperson in advance of January 1, 2015
-This would be a real boost for us in getting the word out and attracting Dipsters!
• Interview Dip spokespeople and/or Dipsters on-site New Year’s Day (12:00-1:00 before the Dip)
-We’re an interesting bunch…cold on the outside, warm on the inside!
• Do the Dip! Be able to report first hand the exhilaration of bathing in 0 degree water.
-Great fun, great drama and bragging rights for a year!
The SA Foundation provides long-term recovery programs to survivors of sexual exploitation and their children. The Foundation has education programs on global human trafficking and manages a hand-crafted jewellery enterprise that provides work and income for survivors of sexual exploitation. Visit safoundation.com for more information. The SA Foundation has the same roots but is not the same organization as the Servants Anonymous Society of Calgary.
Old Guys in Action is an elastic/eclectic group of men and women of all ages that organizes and participate in events including the annual Calgary Icebreaker Polar Dip, distance cycling expeditions such as the 500km 2011 Tour de Sierra Leone and distance running events including the planned 1000km 2015 Run Across Kenya.
