Gift of Hope – A retreat for the unemployed person

Weekend Retreat for Unemployed celebrates its second year!

January 25-26, 2019 will mark the second year of Retreat for the Unemployed, a weekend time away for people without jobs, to relax and rejuvenate at the FCJ Retreat and Conference Centre in Calgary. The program which is offered at no charge to participants, was inspired by a jobless Retreat at St.. Benedict’s Retreat and Conference Centre in Winnipeg.

The purpose of the annual weekend is not to find a job. Instead, it is billed as a “heart-helping” time out from the trauma of being unemployed.

A non-denominational event, the program has hosted people without jobs from laborers to executives. But those who come for these healing weekends share many common emotions associated with the loss of income, feelings of rejection and low self-esteem, personal identity, strained family relationships, fear, and anxiety. The weekend offers people experiencing these emotional stresses an opportunity to spend a weekend away relaxing and sharing their stories with others who understand.

Co-facilitators are Sr. Ger Curran, who has worked as a counsellor for the past 27 years in various settings, and Mirna Farahat who has passed through the experience of being unemployed. She will share her experience on how God works in mysterious ways and always gives us more than what we deserve according to Jeremiah 29:11. Mirna is currently an Independent Finance Consultant for an energy company in Calgary.

While donations are welcome, the weekend is offered free of charge. It is funded by various sponsors.
