Distracted Driving - Dangerous for Your Relationship?
So driving and using your cell phone has risks, right? You’re distracted and can’t put your full attention on the road. But what about the person you’re talking to? Some experts are suggesting that distracted driving could have an affect on your relationship with your spouse or significant other.
Delayed reaction times and impaired attention are also putting people's relationships in danger. A pause in the conversation could be falsely interpreted, divided attention means missed details, cutting a call short because of safety reasons could make someone feel like they’re not important. There is another side to this – a professor at a BC university says cellphones are making more relationships than breaking them – other research shows that only 11 percent of adults believed that new technologies had negatively affected the closeness of their families. The key is having some non-distracted communication time – which means no one’s watching hockey, no one’s talking on their phone and driving, no one’s running after the kids – fitting some time in the day that allows the two of you to at least catch up a little bit without being consumed by something else. Tall order – but worth the effort.
