Bill 44 Goes into Effect Today
That means as of today, you as a parent have more authority to pull your kids out of lessons on religion, human sexuality, and sexual orientation.
Some parents are happy about it – some teachers feel it will stifle conversation in the classroom. And there may be human rights complaints – since parents can now complain to the province's quasi-judicial Human Rights Commission, if they feel they weren't properly notified about a school lesson. So, if your kids are in public school, you’ll be getting more notifications and an opt-out option for lessons that deal with sexuality, sexual orientation, and religion. There are nine courses that will require notification – including studies on religious ethics, parenting and aboriginal spiritual views. Science classes on evolution won’t require notification, but teachers and school boards have to evaluate other instructional material to see whether or not the lesson needs notification. If the subjects happen to come up during a lesson that’s not specifically about religion, sexuality or sexual orientation, notification is not required. It’s a hot topic and now we’re going to see how it all plays out.
