After Two Decades of Drilling, Scientists Reach Antarctica Lake
After more than two decades of drilling in Antarctica, Russian scientists have reached a gigantic freshwater lake hidden under miles of ice for a long, long time – they say 20 million years. Finally touching the surface of Lake Vostok, the largest of nearly 400 subglacial lakes in Antarctica, is a major discovery. The lake’s conditions are similar to those expected to be found under the ice crust on Mars, and the moons of Jupiter and Saturn.
Wow – drilling for 20 years in Antarctica! That’s PERSISTENCE! Kind of inspiring, actually. Sometimes things look like they're NEVER going to get anywhere, but when you finally succeed and look back at all the time you spent waiting, it's a GREAT feeling! Keep at it, whatever it is!
