Cook Cereals While You Sleep

Posted by Annette Jennings  |  POST A COMMENT

All laugh's aside – Jan and Feb typically cold snappy weather here in Canada so a warm and ready breakfast is a nice start to a hectic morning.

How To Cook Cereals While You Sleep - Thermos Style

Before retiring, stir 1/2 cup of your favorite raw cereal–wheat, oats, rye, or buckwheat, preferably cracked–into two cups of salted boiling water. Stir for just three minutes, then pour into a wide-mouth thermos bottle. Cork the bottle tightly. Next morning you will be greeted by a hot cereal, ready to be eaten. Sprinkle with wheat germ and bran. Add milk or cream. Really gets your motor going. Berries of all kinds are good sources of potassium and fairly good sources of calcium and magnesium.

Crockpot Oatmeal

Serve steel cut oats to your family for breakfast, but without having to stand at the stove for 30 minutes in the morning. (If you are not familiar with steel cut oats they are very unprocessed and therefore very healthy and filling, but time consuming to cook. They are the oat groat that has been chopped. *Do not try this with regular oatmeal! Look for "Irish oatmeal" or "steel cut oats". You will wake up to a steaming hot pot of oatmeal-like your (imaginary) chef made breakfast while you slept...

ingredients:

1cup steel cut oats*

1cup dried fruit of choice (raisins, cranberries, apricots etc)

4 cups water

1/2 cup half & half

toppings to add before serving:

butter, sugar, honey, cinnamon, nuts or anything else you like!

Directions:

Spray inside of crock pot with cooking spray. Combine all ingredients in crock pot and cover. Cook on LOW for 7-8 hours. Stir well, top and enjoy.
