Started reading the book. Kind of makes me feel guilty. We used to have more sit down dinners, but with the kids getting older, it's getting harder. Can't wait to try the receipies.

Yes, this is a good book to read, especially if you are trying to figure out what to do to bring your family closer together. A family dinner around the table will open up so many things! Not sure about the recipes, don't know if they are anything I'd make, they look ok I guess!!

My first thought was how can a topic about having family meal together sustain a whole book? After reading the introduction and two chapters I already have a positive answer. In fact when the author promised that the book is not going to bog me down with weighty chapters to make a case I already believe in that’s when it got my attention. It is true that I already believe that ‘a family that eats ...together grows closer together’ but I don’t practice it as much as I can. This is because understanding what makes a healthy home is not the same as building one. This requires being proactive (page 8). And a person only becomes proactive when he is intentional in doing something. But first for a person to become intentional he must truly believe in the outcome of his action and that is what this book is doing – presenting the ‘secrets’ of a thriving family by looking at the most-compelling reasons for taking a proactive position on the ritual of a family dinner hour. If a family meal is worth it then this book is worth reading.

Just even the chapter titles (1) Creating the safest Place on Earth or (4) The Heart of Great Table Talk or (5) How to Listen so our Kids Talk, that one I love! I couldn't agree more Gigi with your statement "If a family meal is worth it then this book is worth reading." Good point! On page ten it talks about keeping a confidence and particularily with our kids ...and how hearing what we may deem harmless talk about them may actually be embarassing to them and we lose trustworthiness in their eyes. I was impacted by that. I think when we have children we are just talking about them all the time - like oh my gosh my little girl is walking and then she climbed up on something so it becomes a part of you but yet YES they are a seperate entity and I need to curb what I chat about!
